When it was time to adopt again, we began our search of shelters and rescues through many websites, but we found petfinder.com the most helpful. As you know, we had fallen in love with our Border Collie-Lab mix, Banjo, and were looking for the same combination of breeds. Petfinder.com allows you to search for specific breeds within a certain distance from your home.
We looked and looked and finally found Bowden at a Humane Society in Bay County Florida. Again, the whole family (including Banjo) piled into the car and made the 6 hour drive to the panhandle. The last hour of our trip it was pouring down rain so once we got there, we had to meet Bowden in the garage of the facility. He was about 6 months old and so adorable, yet there was something sad in his eyes.
As we introduced Banjo to Bowden, we fell in love. Watching them get to know each other and then start playing together on the floor of the garage was the first time we saw the “puppy” in him and the smile in his eyes. The boys continued to play as we filled out the paperwork to be able to bring him home.
Once home, Bowden fit right into our crazy little family. Of course we had some of the usual puppy problems with house training and chewing on shoes. As we all adjusted we noticed that Bowden was definitely more Lab than Border Collie. He has tons of energy and loves to play with his brother, but is also a big napper and all around “snuggle bunny”.
We are looking forward to seeing if he is the athlete his brother is. We probably won’t attempt the Frisbees again, but we are definitely going to introduce him to dock jumping. After all, water and Labs is the perfect combination… kind of like Dean, Ann, Banjo and Bowden.
